Vicky Earle
Exploring Vancouver Naturehoods: An Artist’s Sketchbook Journal
Review by Briony Penn in The British Columbia Review, July 9, 2024.
Vicky Earle has produced a model curriculum for welcoming a whole new generation of Vancouverites—young and old—to the “tiny treasures,” “birding hotspots,” and “exquisite textures” of the “naturehoods” of Raincity.
Laid out in observations for Vancouverites’ favourite parks, it is an excellent introductory guide to those that seek connection and companions in the natural world but have no one to help them get started.
Review by Janet Nicol in BC BookWorld, Summer 2023, pp. 20–21.
The information conveyed in her sketchbook promotes a greater awareness of all living things, great and small.
A visual feast of west coast wildlife and plants, Earle used graphite, ink and watercolours, annotating each sketch with informative, playful and sometimes quirky text. At the sketchbook’s end, Earle offers helpful tips for those interested in keeping their own nature journal. She is the perfect guide, being a professional illustrator in the fields of natural science, medicine and botany.
